Nancy Bui-Thompson was first elected to the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) Board of Directors in November 2008 to represent the 215,000 constituents of Ward 2, which includes the communities of Folsom, Rancho Cordova, Gold River, Rancho Murieta, Galt, Wilton and Elk Grove. She is currently serving her third term, and recently completed her second term as President of the of the Board Directors for 2016.
For over 70 years, SMUD has served Sacramento’s 617,000 business and residential customers, with a population of 1.5 million, SMUD is the nation’s sixth-largest public electric utility. SMUD is governed by a seven-member publicly elected Board of Directors that determines policies and strategic directives for the utility. The SMUD Board’s policies and values include competitive rates, environmental leadership, customer relations, reliability and safety, which has made SMUD a nationally and internationally as leader in renewable energy and energy efficiency. SMUD was one of the first utilities in California to set and meet an RPS goal of 20%. SMUD is currently on track to meet a RPS goal of 33% by 2020. SMUD is one the highest highest-rated utilities in the nation, consistently ranking 1st in California by J.D Power and Associates, for over a decade for residential and business customer satisfaction. Most recently, in 2016, SMUD was ranked #1 among electric utilities for Corporate Citizenship. Along with holding one of the greenest portfolio’s in the state, SMUD’s electric rates are among the lowest in California and 30% lower than our neighboring utility.
For over 15 years, Bui-Thompson has served as a technology and management professional who has worked with state and local government agencies as well as energy and health-care organizations. She is currently a Director at Public Consulting Group in their Technology practice. She previously was a consultant for two of the world’s largest and best-known consulting companies – Accenture and Deloitte. Bui-Thompson has served as a consultant to executive-level management for many large employers, bringing efficiency and project management to their organizations.
Bui-Thompson was awarded one of the “40 under 40” honors from the Sacramento Business Journal and is also a New Leaders Council National 40 under 40 award winner. In 2012, the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) awarded the prestigious Marshall Memorial Fellowship (MMF) to Bui-Thompson. The GMF is a non-partisan American public policy and grant-making institution dedicated to promoting better understanding and cooperation between North America and Europe on transatlantic and global issues.
She is a proud graduate of California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo, with a bachelor of science in economics and management information systems.
